Neutrogena, dermatologist recommended brand for acne

Neutrogena is an American brand that focuses on skincare, hair care, and cosmetics. It was founded in 1930 by Emanuel Stolaroff and the company was originally called Natone. It is now part of the Johnson & Johnson conglomerate. Johnson & Johnson bought out the company in 1994. The product range can now be found in over 70 countries around the world.

Neutrogena is well known for its commercials that features various spoke models. These men and women are well known in the field of entertainment.

Some of the spokespeople are:

  • Queen Latifah
  • Vanessa Hudgens
  • Miranda Cosgrove
  • Olivia Thorne
  • Mandy Moore
  • Jennifer Garner
  • Kelly Preston

With an amazing range of spoke persons who use their products, one would think that the product house is flawless but this is not the case. There are many pros to Neutrogena however, there are a few cons as well.

Neutrogena pros

First and foremost the fact that this product house can be found in over 70 countries means that you can find the brand easily. This makes it a convenient brand to follow and to use.

Neutrogena is a great product when it comes to acne prone skin and breakouts. In my opinion, Neutrogena is one of the leading brands when it comes to helping teenagers with their hormone changes in their skin.

I don’t often talk about packaging however, Neutrogena has packaged their products in such a way that is bright, friendly and makes you want to buy their products. Their bottles do not leak which is a huge pro because often once you are halfway through with your product, the sides of the bottle begin to break and you can get product wastage. You really do get your monies worth when you buy Neutrogena products.

The best products to buy from Neutrogena is their skincare range. Even though they have hair care, their skincare range is where this brand really shines. They do offer a wide range of products such as make-up and shampoos but people tend to fall in love with the brand due to their acne fighting products.

It is hard to find a product house that is gentle on the skin and yet can help maintain a clear looking skin that is smooth and leaves the skin feeling fresh and healthy. I really take my hat off to Neutrogena because they focus their products on teenagers which encourages a regular skincare routine as well as helps people feel more comfortable within their skin. Once you are hooked on the product, there are products for adults as well as more mature skin types.

This is a very clever strategy and one skincare therapists love because once you see that after 2 weeks, your skin starts to look better, you will continue to use skincare products.

Finally, I am all for education. On the Neutrogena website, there is a link for expert advice. This will help you figure out a daily routine, how to deal with skin imperfections before it gets out of hand and how to deal with problems such as dry hands. It is always very important that as a consumer, you understand the product you are placing on your skin and how to use it so that you get the best results.

Every product house is different, therefore, how you use the products are different. I really enjoy the fact that Neutrogena sees how important it is to educate people when it comes to their skin and products they use.

Neutrogena cons

There are a few speculations going around saying that Neutrogena is Cruelty-free. This is not as true as we would like it to be. Even though Neutrogena claims that some of their products are cruelty-free, not 100% of their products are. They have been blacklisted from the PETA organization due to the fact that they test on animals where required by law. This means that even though they do not test in your country, they do the test in other countries.

  • Finished products tested on animals: No
  • Ingredients tested on animals: No
  • Third party animal testing: No
  • Tested on animals where required by law: Yes
  • Sold in mainland China: Yes
  • Certifications: None (On PETA’s “do test” list)
  • Parent company: Johnson & Johnson
  • Parent company status: NOT cruelty-free

I take comfort in knowing that the whole process of product making is not tested on animals and the products I buy have not been tested on animals because my country does not have a law that tested on animals is required for foreign product houses.

Another small con that I have with the product is that they could be using stronger ingredients to help fight acne and other skin conditions so that the results can be seen a little quicker than what they are now. People want instant gratification these days and by using Neutrogena, you get your results a little bit slower than other brands, however, the results are satisfying once you see them.

Some people find the products to leave a bit of a residue on the skin after you apply it. This is not a desired feel on the skin. It can make your skin feel sticky and oily. For people who have oily skin, they do not want their skin to feel extra oily.

Overall, Neutrogena has more pros than cons. Even though the products do not work for a few people, overall people love using their products and have been using them for years. I love the fact that they have their own Sun protection range. SPF is very important when it comes to looking after your skin and making sure that you do not get premature aging.

Neutrogena has been around for many years and it does not look like they are stopping anytime soon. I recommend this brand often to my clients and I get very few complaints about Neutrogena.
